A Word on Giving – Pastor Dave Mergens
“For God so loved the world, He gave…” John 3:16

WHY GIVE: When we love, we give!
John 3:16 Reminds us that giving is the result of our love. Think about where
you give your time, spend your money, use your skills. Love directs your resources.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer…
All the believers were together and had everything in common.
They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Acts 2:42, 44-45
WHAT ARE WE GIVING TO: We are better together.
Alone we can go faster, but together, we go farther! The Church has looked different over the years,
but the heart is sharing resources toward accomplishing Kingdom work we cannot accomplish alone.
WHERE SHOULD WE GIVE:
First, pray about this. Your home church is a good starting place. This is the place God
established in your community to minister where you live.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly
or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
WHO SHOULD GIVE: Give with conviction, not compulsion.
We live in a world of “asks” and “demands.” If it is your conviction to support the shared
mission and ministry of our local church, then give.

As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:1-4
HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE: Be generous.
In the Bible, you’ll see amounts range from 10% given (Genesis 14:18-20) to everything (Luke 21:1-4). The principle is generosity, there is no “rule,” only examples. Like any spiritual discipline, start small, be consistent, and take it further.
WHERE DOES IT GO: Where our congregation decides.
We steward resources prayerfully, transparently, and in community. Collaborative leadership
proposes and oversees budgets with feedback and final approval given by our membership.

For offerings and tithes, we pass a basket as it gives us the chance for us to respond to God's generosity with our own.
